Threading lesbian carthographies: Body mapping through embroidery
Unfortunately workshop is already fully booked!
This workshop offers a collective creative space for everyone who defines as lesbian or sapphic to explore and reflect on our lesbian life stories through the intertwined practices of body mapping, embroidery, and creative writing.
Drawing on the concept of body-territory—inspired by Latin American feminist thinkers like Lorena Cabnal—we will map the landscapes of our bodies as territories marked by experiences, memories, multiple violences, resistances, joy and desire. Using the methodology of body cartography and the historical power of textile arts as forms of memory and political expression, we will embroider our personal body cartography to materialize stories often silenced or marginalized. Together, we will stitch connections between our narratives, reclaim our bodies as sites of knowledge, and weave solidarities that begin in the flesh and reach towards collective healing and emancipation.
Itzel Cadena Alvear is a psychologist, philosopher of science, and textile artist. Through her independent project Hilos de vida in Mexico City, she has created spaces where embroidery and textile-making become tools for feminist activism, healing, and collective reflection. She is currently researching feminist epistemologies, textile practices as forms of knowledge and political action, cognitive diversity, and the lived experience of chronic pain in feminized bodies.
